How to manage Spread Betting Risk

By admin [27th November, 2011]

Spread betting is a risky business and if you want to be successful at it, it is essential that you are organised and manage your spread betting risk effectively.  There are a number of awfully easy ways you can go about doing this and we will discuss each one in turn.

1.  Monitor your Open Positions

If you are likely to place a large number of bets within a day, the easiest way to manage your risk is to stay on top of your open positions.  Markets can change within a split second and when a change occurs, you could find yourself losing a lot of money.  It is important to note that this is especially true if you aren’t using a stop loss (see below).

2. Understand your market

There is a massive number of markets on offer by spread betting companies, thousands in fact.  Before you start dealing in spreads you want to make sure you fully understand the market that you are betting on.  Different markets have different risks associated with them and varying degrees of volatility.  Understanding what effects prices in the market you are taking a position on can be the difference between making a huge profit, or taking a large hit.

  • We would suggest you keep up today with all relevant news to your market by:

  • Following updates on offer by your spread betting company.

  • Read finance websites such as the FT, Bloomberg, and Reuters.

  • Monitor all relevant financial data.  For example www.forexfactory.com offers some really great data on the Forex markets.

3.  Stop Losses

Perhaps the most important tool for managing risk is the stop loss.  A stop loss is a facility that many spread betting companies offer that allows you to state a price where you will automatically close if the market goes against you.  With spread betting being a leveraged instrument, losses can easily spiral out of control and by implementing a stop loss you can limit this risk.

Although it isn’t really a tip for managing risk, we would strongly suggest you read the guides and analytical available through this website and your spread betting provider.  Most spread betting companies provide a whole host of invaluable information to help you improve your spread betting knowledge and become a more successful spread bettor.

Thanks for reading this guide, I hope it helps you become more successful at spread betting.  If you would like to ask any questions, or have any feedback for the site, please get in touch by emailing: info@spreadbettingcompanies.com.
